Designing Your Outdoor Living Space

Michigan Interior Designer - Outdoor Living SpaceOne of the big home trends we’re seeing in southeast Michigan and Macomb County is the creation of outdoor living spaces. There was a time when homeowners had a patio with a grill, a dining table and maybe a pool in their yard. Today, homeowners want more. Outdoor living spaces are quickly becoming a necessary extension of your home’s interior. These spaces have seating and dinging areas, kitchens, wet bars, and of course a complete pool area. For many of our customers, this means there is another space to decorate. With summer right around the corner, here are our thoughts for designing a beautiful outdoor living space.

Start Your Design Early

If you are working with a landscaping company to design your new outdoor living space, include us in the process. The earlier your decorator is involved, the better we can help you and your landscape designer with flow and layout so your new outdoor living space is practical and works well with your existing features. We are also able to offer input on things like awnings, draperies, colors and other subtle design features that you or your landscape designer may not be thinking about. The sooner you include us in the process, the better.

Decide on the Color Scheme

You have a variety of options when it comes to color for your outdoor living space. Many of our clients prefer a muted and neutral color palette that will work well with their home’s exterior and the building materials for the space. This creates a beautiful and elegant space, and gives your outdoor living area a serene ambiance. The other end of the spectrum is to decorate in bold, bright colors. Some of our clients want their outdoor living spaces to be reminiscent of an island escape. If you’re going for a tropical look and feel, then bright blues, reds, yellows and oranges will bring a fun vibrant atmosphere and add a bold splash of color to your outdoor space. Like the idea of both? Consider a neutral foundation with accent pieces like pillows, rugs or an umbrella in bright colors.

The Right Furniture

This can make or break your living space, whether indoors or outdoors. Selecting the right furniture for the space is what will encourage your family and guests to spend plenty of time in your outdoor living space. Comfy couches and arm chairs around a fire pit are perfect for relaxing at the end of the day or socializing with friends. Comfortable dinging furniture that is easy to clean but looks great is perfect for your cooking and dining area. Great loungers and water resistant fabrics are a must for your pool side retreat.

Drapery

Great drapes aren’t just for your windows. We love the idea of creating shade by draping beautiful fabric on your pergola. If you want to create a sophisticated private space, or just make your outdoor area look a little softer, drapes are a great option around pergolas and between the different areas of your outdoor living space. Drapes create separation and privacy that aren’t permanent and much more natural feeling than wood or stone walls.
